Former Chile international Arturo Vidal has spoken out in support of Cristiano Ronaldo, expressing his disappointment over the treatment the Portuguese superstar allegedly received while on international duty.
Vidal, who has enjoyed a decorated career at both club and international level, believes Ronaldo deserves greater respect and protection because of his status as one of the greatest players in football history.
“It’s very ugly what they did to him on the national team,” Vidal said. “And what the coach did is very nasty. Cristiano needs to be looked after as he’s one of the greatest in history.”
Ronaldo has been one of Portugal’s most important players for nearly two decades. Since making his senior debut, the forward has played a major role in the country’s success and has repeatedly carried significant expectations whenever he represents the national team.
The comments from Vidal have therefore drawn attention, particularly because of the Chilean’s own experience of international football. Vidal represented Chile at major tournaments for many years and was part of the generation that won consecutive Copa América titles in 2015 and 2016.
For Vidal, Ronaldo’s contribution to Portugal means his treatment should be handled with considerable care, particularly as the veteran forward approaches the latter stages of his international career.
Ronaldo has continued to maintain a prominent role for Portugal despite his age, remaining one of the most recognizable figures in world football. His leadership, experience and goals have made him a central figure in the national team setup.
The relationship between a coach and a senior player can sometimes become complicated, especially when expectations and decisions surrounding playing time, tactics or leadership come under scrutiny. However, Vidal believes Ronaldo’s achievements should be taken into consideration when decisions involving the Portuguese captain are made.
The former Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Juventus midfielder’s remarks have also reignited discussion about how established football stars should be managed during the later stages of their careers.
Ronaldo has already built an extraordinary legacy, including numerous individual awards, domestic trophies and international success with Portugal. He was instrumental in Portugal’s triumph at Euro 2016 and their UEFA Nations League success in 2019.
Regardless of differing opinions over individual decisions involving the Portuguese team, Vidal’s message is clear: Ronaldo’s contribution to football should not be forgotten.
As Portugal continues preparing for its upcoming international commitments, attention will remain on Ronaldo, his relationship with the coaching staff and the role he will play for the national team.
For Vidal, however, one point remains important – a player who has achieved what Ronaldo has deserves respect and careful treatment, particularly as he continues to represent his country on the international stage.
