Asante Kotoko Identify Marian Marinica as Potential Tinkler Successor

Asante Kotoko have reportedly opened discussions with Romanian coach Marian Marinica as the club continues its search for a permanent head coach following the departure of Eric Tinkler.

According to Harry Awuah of Oyerepa FM/TV Sports, the Porcupine Warriors have begun talks with the experienced tactician as they consider potential candidates to take charge of the team for the remainder of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season.

Tinkler left the club in September 2026 after requesting to be released from his contract for personal reasons. His departure forced the Kumasi-based side to begin the process of identifying a suitable replacement to lead the team forward.

Since the South African coach’s exit, coaches Diego Peral and Hamza Obeng have been involved in overseeing the team during the transition, with the club seeking stability on the technical bench.

Marinica brings considerable experience in African football, having previously managed the national teams of Malawi and Liberia. His experience across the continent could make him an interesting candidate for Kotoko as they look to strengthen their technical leadership and improve their performances in domestic competition.

The Romanian coach most recently took charge of Zimbabwe in November 2025, adding another African national-team assignment to his coaching career.

Kotoko’s reported interest in Marinica comes at a crucial period for the club, which is aiming to maintain competitiveness in the Ghana Premier League while working towards its broader sporting objectives.

The Porcupine Warriors are one of Ghana’s most successful football clubs and face considerable expectations from their supporters, who will be eager to see the appointment of a coach capable of restoring consistency and guiding the team towards success.

However, discussions with Marinica do not necessarily mean that an agreement has been reached. As of the time of reporting, there has been no official confirmation from Asante Kotoko regarding his potential appointment.

The coming days could provide further clarity on the club’s plans as management continues its search for a permanent successor to Tinkler.
