Alexander Ababio, President of Debibi United FC, has strongly criticised Bibiani Gold Stars head coach Petros Koukouras following the coach’s reported description of the Debibi Presby Park as a cassava plantation.
Ababio described the comments as unprofessional, unreasonable and reckless, insisting that such remarks were completely unacceptable and disrespectful to the club and its efforts to develop football infrastructure.
“I think Debibi United’s pitch is designated for cassava plantation,” Koukouras reportedly said, making a comment that has drawn a strong response from the leadership of the Ghana Premier League side.
Reacting to the statement in an interview with Oyerepa FM, Ababio did not hide his displeasure, expressing disappointment over the choice of words used by the Gold Stars coach.
According to the Debibi United president, it was inappropriate for a coach of Koukouras’ standing to describe a football facility in such a manner. He believes the comment went beyond constructive criticism and amounted to an unacceptable attack on the club and its home ground.
“It is very unprofessional, unreasonable and reckless for Petros Koukouras to describe the Debibi Presby Park as a cassava plantation. His comments are rubbish and completely unacceptable,” Ababio stated.
The disagreement has brought renewed attention to the condition of football pitches used by clubs in Ghana, particularly those competing in the Ghana Premier League. The quality of playing surfaces remains an important subject in Ghanaian football, with concerns often raised about how pitch conditions affect players, match performance and the overall standard of the game.
While the condition of a football pitch can be a legitimate subject for discussion, Ababio’s reaction suggests that he believes such concerns should be communicated respectfully rather than through remarks that could undermine the efforts of clubs working to provide facilities for their players.
For Debibi United, the Presby Park serves as an important venue for the club’s football activities. The president’s response reflects the importance the club attaches to its facilities and the need for its work to be discussed in a constructive manner.
The exchange also highlights the broader conversation surrounding football infrastructure in Ghana, where clubs continue to face expectations to provide suitable playing surfaces despite differences in resources and facilities.
Koukouras’ reported remark and Ababio’s subsequent response have placed the two football figures at the centre of a debate over professionalism, respect and the standards expected from individuals involved in the game.
The comments were reported by Oyerepa FM, where Ababio expressed his strong objection to the Gold Stars coach’s description of the Debibi Presby Park.
