VIDEO – Frank Nelson Explains Decision to Play 2026/27 MTN FA Cup Final Over Two Legs

Frank Nelson Nwokolo, Vice Chairman of the MTN FA Cup Committee, has explained the decision to introduce a two-legged final for the 2026/27 MTN FA Cup season.

Nwokolo spoke on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, during the MTN FA Cup preliminary-round draw held at the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Conference Room at the GFA Head Office.

The event, which began at 11:00 a.m., brought together football stakeholders as preparations got underway for the new MTN FA Cup campaign.

As Vice Chairman of the committee responsible for the competition, Nwokolo addressed the decision to have the final played over two legs rather than the traditional single-match format.

The proposed arrangement represents a significant change to the competition and is expected to generate discussion among clubs, supporters and other stakeholders in Ghanaian football.

A two-legged final would give both participating teams the opportunity to host a match, allowing supporters from each club to experience the excitement of a final on home soil.

The format could also provide additional opportunities for clubs to engage their supporters and create matchday revenue, although its overall impact will depend on the organisation and implementation of the new arrangement.

The 2026/27 MTN FA Cup season is expected to attract participation from clubs across different divisions, giving lower-tier sides an opportunity to compete for national recognition and potentially face some of Ghana’s biggest football clubs.

The preliminary-round draw on October 13 marked an important step towards the start of the competition, with participating teams looking to progress through the early stages and move closer to lifting the prestigious trophy.

The MTN FA Cup remains one of Ghana’s major domestic football competitions, offering clubs outside the Premier League an opportunity to compete against established teams and potentially secure continental qualification through success in the tournament, subject to the applicable competition regulations.

Nwokolo’s comments at the draw provided an opportunity to explain the committee’s thinking behind the proposed final format as the football fraternity looks ahead to another competitive season.

Further details about the implementation of the two-legged final will be important as the competition progresses and participating clubs prepare for their respective fixtures.
